Gearbox Software is confusing.
They definitely have the capability to make a good game. Borderlands and Borderlands 2, while not really my style of game, are fine. They look nice, they play just fine and the writing is well done. But the problem seems to be from trying to finish other developers games.
First strike was Duke Nukem: Forever, a game long stuck in development-hell, which released to pretty terrible reviews. The game looked like it was never coming out. Hell, it was announced over 10 years prior to it's eventual release, but Gearbox swept in and picked up the franchise; surprising all of us, I think, when the game actually hit shelves.
Now, they seem to have struck fools gold again. Aliens: Colonial Marines is releasing to some harsh, very critical reviews. So far I've only made it to two of them. But IGN's and Polygon's reviews said it all.
I'm very curious to see how Gearbox and president Randy Pitchford respond to all this criticism. 2K ended up firing the PR agency covering Duke Nukem: Forever after they tweeted about withholding future review copies from critics who they felt were too mean.
I doubt a mistake like that will happen again. I'm hoping to see Randy Pitchford directly respond to this situation.
